Home Resource Center Glossary IPv6 Migration, Scaling, Transition

Since IPv4 and IPv6 are incompatible, both protocols have to be supported simultaneously in order to provide a smooth migration and seamless user experience. A number of migration technologies are available such as CGN, DS-Lite, 6rd, SLB-PT (SLB-64), NAT64/DNS64.

A10's Carrier Grade NAT product line provides a broad range of high-performance, highly transparent address and protocol translation options for service providers to extend their IPv4 network connectivity, while simultaneously making the transition to IPv6 with a broad choice of transition options. When implementing these technologies, application reliability is a key factor not to be compromised.

Customers can extend IPv4 connectivity with standards-based Carrier Grade NAT (CGN/CGNAT) preserving their existing IPv4 address allocation and their investment in IPv4-based infrastructure. Since IPv6 is not backward compatible with IPv4, transition to IPv6 requires various solutions that can be run concurrently so network operators can phase in transition mechanisms as needed, such as DS-Lite, 6rd, LW4o6, NAT64/DNS64. As application reliability is crucial for applications that need to be available at all times, advanced features are required. Advanced CGNAT features ensure transparency (such as Endpoint Independent Mapping (EIM) and hairpinning); Application Layer Gateways (ALGs) ensure transparent protocol connectivity, and stateful session synchronization enables hitless failover for user sessions.

A10 has a range of CGN product lines, including our high performance Thunder and AX Series CGN appliances as well as our virtual and hybrid CGN appliances vThunder and Thunder HVA, providing a broad array of form-factors and deployment options. Built on the Advanced Core Operating System (ACOS) with an advanced application networking feature set, A10 CGN devices can achieve operational efficiency and high performance in a compact solution.

For organizations that wish to easily enable an existing IPv4 web site with IPv6 connectivity, Server Load Balancing Protocol Translation (SLB-PT) is available in our Thunder and AX Series Application Delivery Controller (ADC) products.
